The classroom does not need another screen

Classrooms have accumulated devices, dashboards, apps, and AI tools faster than anyone has asked what each one does for learning. It is time to stop counting technology as progress and start making every tool earn its place.

The modern classroom has a strange hardware problem: there is always room for one more device. A laptop joins the projector. A tablet joins the laptop. A learning management system joins the tablet, followed by a quiz app, an adaptive practice platform, an AI tutor, a parent dashboard, and a second dashboard that explains the first one.

Each purchase arrives with a reasonable promise. Make lessons more engaging. Give teachers better data. Personalize practice. Prepare students for a digital future. The problem appears when those promises accumulate. A tool that saves five minutes can consume ten in logins, updates, tab switching, and troubleshooting. A device purchased to expand possibility can quietly become the default surface for reading, writing, discussion, practice, and assessment.

Technology is not neutral once it occupies the student's attention. It is competing with the lesson.

More technology is not the same as better learning

Education has spent years treating access to technology as a useful proxy for modern instruction. Access matters. A student who needs assistive software, a rural class connecting to a specialist, or a family reaching school during an emergency can gain something transformative from the right tool.

But the leap from some technology solves real problems to more technology improves school is unsupported. UNESCO's 2023 Global Education Monitoring Report found that good, impartial evidence for education technology's added value is scarce, while inappropriate or excessive use can be distracting and harmful [1]. It also points to a telling failure: distributing more than a million laptops in Peru did not improve learning when the devices were not integrated into pedagogy.

The lesson is not that laptops are bad. It is that logistics are not pedagogy. Shipping a device is easy to count. Better judgment, stronger recall, and deeper understanding are harder to measure—and much easier to neglect.

The cost is fractured attention

A screen is not a blank sheet of paper with better lighting. It is a portal designed to contain everything at once. The assignment sits one tab away from a message, a video, a game, or an answer generator. Even when students intend to stay on task, the device continually offers them an exit.

In PISA 2022, 30% of students reported being distracted by digital devices in most or every mathematics lesson. Student-led device use was negatively associated with performance in reading, science, and mathematics, while teacher-led or combined use tended to be more effective [2]. Context matters. Purpose matters. Supervision matters. "Digital" by itself tells us almost nothing about the quality of a learning experience.

Attention is not merely a classroom-management concern. It is the material learning is made from. Students need enough uninterrupted time to hold an idea in mind, test it, notice a contradiction, and try again. If the medium keeps breaking that sequence, the lesson cannot recover just because the content on screen is educational.

Every layer taxes the teacher, too

Oversaturation does not only scatter students. It turns teachers into systems administrators. They reset passwords, sync rosters, translate between file formats, monitor tabs, learn new interfaces, diagnose Wi-Fi problems, and explain to families which portal contains which assignment.

The best classroom technology should return time and attention to a teacher. Too often it asks the teacher to reorganize the classroom around the product. When a tool's workflow becomes the lesson's workflow, its assumptions begin deciding what can be taught, how work must be submitted, and which parts of student thinking count as data.

A multiple-choice platform sees selections. A text box sees typed prose. A streak counter sees consecutive logins. None of those are the same thing as understanding. Convenient data can become dangerous when schools begin teaching toward whatever the dashboard can display.

Use technology at the point of leverage

The answer is not a nostalgic purge. Students should learn to use powerful digital tools, understand how algorithms shape their choices, and work competently in the world they actually inhabit. The question is where technology creates enough value to justify its demands on attention.

A useful test is brutally simple:

  1. What learning problem does this tool solve?
  2. Could a teacher, conversation, book, or piece of paper solve it better?
  3. What new distraction, dependency, or administrative work does it introduce?
  4. What evidence would convince us to keep it—or remove it?

The Education Endowment Foundation reaches a similar conclusion in its evidence review: technology's effect depends on how it is integrated with teaching, and schools should begin with a defined learning need rather than a device [3].
